Graduate Council: Election Process

ELECTION OF THE BATTEN SCHOOL GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS FROM THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FRANK BATTEN SCHOOL GRADUATE STUDENT COUNCIL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

ARTICLE V: ELECTIONS

Section 1. Elected Officers of the Council

A. The Elected Officers of the Batten School shall be elected by popular vote among the members of the Batten School Graduate Student Body. The Elected Officers of the Council shall be elected according to the rules and regulations established by the University Board of Elections and by the constitutions of their respective organizations.

Section 2. Multiple Candidacies

A. A candidate may run for two Executive positions on the Council. Candidates must indicate preference between the two positions. If a candidate wins the election for both positions, the candidate shall fill their preferred position. The other position will be filled by whomever receives the second-highest number of votes.

Section 3. Term of Office

A. Council Members

The term of office for all Executive Committee members and Representatives to the Honor Committee, the University Judiciary Committee, and the Student Council, shall be for two consecutive semesters and shall commence at the first meeting of the Council in the month of February of a given academic year. This term of office is superseded in the case of representatives to the Honor Committee, the University Judiciary Committee, and the Student Council by the constitutions of their respective organizations.

B. Class Representatives

The term of office for Class Representatives shall be for two consecutive semesters and shall commence at the first meeting of the Council in the month of September of a given academic year. Class Representatives may serve concurrently as Executive Officers.

Section 4. Appointments to Vacant Positions

A. In the event that a representative position within the Council becomes vacant, the Council shall appoint a member of the Frank Batten School Graduate Student Body to fill the vacancy on an interim basis until either a special election/selection is held or the term expires.

Section 5. Agency Representative Positions

A. Executive Officers may serve concurrently as a Frank Batten School representative to the Honor Committee, University Judiciary Committee, or Student Council.
