Graduate Council: Member Bios

Maggie Gratz, President

Maggie is a second-year accelerated MPP candidate in the Batten School. She is from Doylestown, Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2017 with a degree in Global Development Studies. Her policy interests include economic development and poverty reduction, environmental sustainability, and aid effectiveness. Outside of school, she likes to revel in Charlottesville’s food scene and the Shenandoah Valley’s trail systems. She’s also a Class of 2017 Trustee, an avid amateur basketball player, and an NPR fanatic. Reach out to Maggie at mng7cz@virginia.edu.

Matthew Hensell, Secretary

Matthew is a second-year post graduate MPP candidate who is interested in international and security policy, specifically regarding China. As Secretary, he maintains Batten Council meeting minutes and handles Batten merchandise orders. Prior to attending Batten, Matthew studied Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, graduating in 2013. Following graduation, he taught English in Shenzhen, China for two years. Ben Yahnian, Treasurer

Ben Yahnian is a second-year accelerated MPP student. He received his BA in Economics from UVA in 2017. His interests include financial and economic policy. Last summer he interned for a financial consulting firm in Washington, DC. Outside of Batten Council, Ben is an opinion columnist for the CavDaily and a team member in FCG Consulting. Katie Brandon and Danny Niez, Co-Special Events Chairs

Katie is a second-year accelerated MPP candidate in the Batten School. She is from Fredericksburg, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2017 with a degree in Foreign Affairs. Her policy interests include national security and intelligence policy. Outside of Batten, she’s involved with Student Council and the Jefferson Society. Danny is a second-year accelerated MPP candidate in the Batten School. He is from Fairfax, Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia in 2017 with a degree in Foreign Affairs. His policy interests include foreign policy and national security, but Danny is happy to explore all policy fields. Katie Kozlowski, Community Engagement Chair

Katie is a second-year accelerated MPP candidate from Winchester, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Education from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia with a major in Youth and Social Innovation in May of 2017. Her policy interests include education policy and participatory action policy, and she hopes to pursue a career in the higher education reform. Outside of the Batten School, Katie enjoys spending time on Lake Anna, frolicking and soaking in rays of sunshine with friends, and (shamefully) watching everything on Netflix.
