Alum Spotlight: Nate Jewell (BA '16)

Nate Jewell is a 2016 graduate of the Batten School’s Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and Leadership program. A native of Culpeper, Va., Jewell has been an active duty member of the United States Air Force since 2017.

Alum Spotlight: Breanna Gray (MPP '12)

Breanna Gray is currently a doctoral student in political science at the University of Pennsylvania. She is a 2012 graduate of the Batten School’s Accelerated Master of Public Policy program at the University of Virginia (UVA). Breanna is also a 2011 UVA graduate, earning a Bachelor of Arts in foreign affairs and in French. Breanna is a former U.S. Department of Homeland Security Congressional Liaison. She is a native of Laurel, Md., and she is a member of the American Political Science Association and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.

Alumni Spotlight: Melina Flabiano (MPP '13)

Melina Flabiano (Schoppa) is a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences (BA '12) and Batten (MPP '13). She is currently finishing her MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. She is the founder of Keaton, a women’s workwear brand offering a thoughtfully-designed work pant created with input from 300 professional women. She is a Charlottesville native, lifelong fashion lover, dog mom, and mixology enthusiast.

Alum Spotlight: Griffin Horter (BA '15)

Griffin Horter is an associate at Inverness Graham Investments, a private equity fund focused on growing innovative manufacturing, technology and services companies. He graduated from Batten with a B.A. in Public Policy & Leadership in 2015. In addition to his role as a private equity investor, Horter serves as a cavalry scout in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. As a cavalry scout, Horter is responsible for being the eyes and ears of the commander during battle by engaging the enemy in the field and tracking and reporting enemy movements.

Alum Spotlight: Christina Conell (MPP '10)

Christina serves as a branch chief with US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. Over the past several years, she has worked in several roles supporting the National School Lunch Program, including serving as a founding member of the Office of Community Food Systems, where she advised policy officials on farm to school initiatives and helped school districts procure more local foods. As a 2010 Batten graduate, Christina holds fond memories of late nights in Varsity Hall eating Mellow Mushroom and working on the latest issue of the Virginia Policy Review.

Alum Spotlight: Vasiliy (Wes) Malychev (MPP '14)

Wes Malychev is a Mobile Lead at Google in London, UK. He graduated from the Accelerated MPP program in 2014. Malychev also has a B.A. in Economics and Politics from CLAS ‘13. In addition to his core role at Google, Malychev has also trained Ann Arbor public school teachers on how to use Google Apps in their classroom, helped an East Oakland-based nonprofit manage a $100,000 Google.org grant, and facilitated a Negotiations course for communities in Manchester and Edinburgh as part of Google’s Digital Garage.

Alum Spotlight: Baylee Eby (MPP '15)

Baylee Eby graduated from the Batten School in 2015 with a Master's of Public Policy. In April 2018, she launched a small social impact company called Dreamer & Co whose mission is to provide job skills and a steady income to young women in the Horn of Africa, helping them realize their potential and feel empowered, dignified, and in turn, flourish in their daily lives.

Alum Spotlight: Michael Russell (BA '16)

Michael Russell recently joined the Global Partnerships Department for the National Basketball Association (NBA), where he is responsible for generating revenue through sales of marketing/media platforms and finding creative ways to integrate partners within the NBA’s business. Previous to joining Global Partnerships full-time, he spent two years in the NBA’s Associate program, a rotational program across different departments within the company. He graduated as a member of Batten’s 2016 undergraduate class and is proud to call UVA a home away from home.

Alum Spotlight: Danielle Childress (MPP '17)

Danielle Childress is a legislative analyst at the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission (JLARC), a non-partisan office that conducts program evaluation, policy analysis, and oversight of state agencies on behalf of the Virginia General Assembly. She graduated from the Accelerated Master of Public Policy program in 2017 and received her B.A. in Psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2016.

Alum Spotlight: Grace Mason (BA '17)

Grace Mason is a Federal Customer Success Manager at Quorum, a public affairs software start-up based in Washington, D.C. She is a proud Batten alum and a member of the undergraduate class of 2017. Before starting at Quorum, Grace worked on Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and served as a 2017-18 Coro Fellow in Public Affairs in St. Louis.

Alum Spotlight: Marissa Bialek (MPP '16)

Marissa Bialek is a People Analyst on the People Innovation Lab (PiLab) at Google in the Bay Area. She graduated from the Accelerated Master of Public Policy program in 2016 and received her B.A. in Political and Social Thought (PST) from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2015. She nerds out to social psychology research, animation, and video games.

Alum Spotlight: Mayura Iyer (MPP '16)

Mayura Iyer is an education policy advocate, teacher, writer, and proud Batten alum. She graduated from the Accelerated Master of Public Policy program in 2016 and received her B.A. in Foreign Affairs from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2015. In May 2018 she will receive her Master of Education degree from Southern Methodist University. Currently, she is a 2nd year corps member with Teach for America, and teaches 11th grade U.S. History in Dallas, Texas. As a policy advocate, she has worked with several organizations, including D.C. Public Schools and the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership. Her articles have been featured in several online publications, including The Huffington Post and Mic.com.
